Pop Culture

I was born tone-deaf and with two left feet. But sometimes when I'm alone in my car or in my room, I do alright. I'm currently listening to Grenade . I have to blog my thoughts on Justin Bi*b*r and pop culture: Spending hours on the internet on a Saturday night Squeezing some time out of my busy adult schedule, checking pop culture on the internet, I notice adults in general can't stand Justin Bi*b*r and would love the chance to crucify knock some sense into any kids screaming for him. Come on, whether you are 30 or 50, you were 15 once. At some point in your life, you must have been into pop culture too. And admit it, there are things that you are embarrassed about obsessing or find funny now: hairstyle, way of networking, choice of music, clothes and more! Let the today's 15-year-olds have their time, shall we? The bowl-cut hair? Please, we soo... have seen the '80s. I don't want to name names, but God was probably mad at the whole entertainment ind...

"We Found What We Were Looking For." - Wise People

*Nods meaningfully.* The process of looking for some red thread has taught me that today. First, I can't sew just like I can't cook, but I believe in the power of visualization. I get up very quickly from bed every morning, visualizing what breakfast I'm going to have that day. Second, I have this loose Thai pants that I wear to sleep that is a bit too long. I've been wearing it for quite some time, but today I thought the extra length was bothering me. So I was all ambitious and cut the legs off, folded and ironed the hem nicely, and took out the sewing kit that I must have gotten from a hotel somewhere. Halfway sewing* (*stitching), I ran out of red thread. I could continue using other colour thread but that would risk me losing sleep at night. I checked around the house, in case, just in case, I had subconsciously prepared myself for this situation and taken every sewing kit I found every time I slept in a hotel. Unfortunately, it looks like that was the ...

Sharing on the Internet

"The spelling! How come your friend didn't get arrested already with her spelling?" "What? Everyone understands them." " NOO . And look, does anyone realize how public this is? Since when are we sharing private jokes and stories with our neighbours, and cousins, and ex-schoolmates that we only spoke 2 and 1/2 words to in school? This one, didn't you hear how huge an a**hole he was in school?" "And this was... 12 years ago, right...?" "This girl, and that neighbour... we have never spoken to them all our lives, why are we letting them know the inside scoop now?" " You ---- have never spoken to them." "You are missing the point. Aren't people keeping things to themselves anymore these days? Aren't some of these rants or photos or stories or exchanges... sacred, or something?" "These are just normal photos and conversations." "What happens to private e-mail, SMS and phone ...

The Confession

Image
About 20 pages reading it, I knew this was the fiction version of The Innocent Man . The Confession is a story of Donte Drumm, a young African-American man who was wrongly convicted for murder and detained for nine years on the death row -- a gory account of miscarriage of justice and death penalty. But since I am a loyal follower, I continued reading it, assuming the ending would turn out exactly like The Innocent Man. Then, of course, I had to scan the last pages to find out the ending. (Is this the part where it's my social responsibility to warn you that a spoiler is coming in the next paragraph? Because as I've told you, I love spoilers. Ninety-eight percent of the time, I wouldn't watch a movie or read a book without knowing exactly how it ends. Why wait?) So let me help you... No, the ending was the exact opposite of The Innocent Man. So it was worth the 400 over pages. Grisham was so obvious in this book, painting the characters that we are not supp...

Catching Up

So I'm not joining the rest of the family in my hometown. I'm nursing my cold, it got better today. Sleeping was a bit of a challenge, though. I woke up at 4 this morning, watched some movie and TV, had some yummy toast, and was in bed again from 7 to 10. I've been camping in front of the TV and logging on to the internet for a few days now. But I've no idea what site to read to keep me sitting still longer than five minutes. I keep switching the laptop on and off. I've kicked off the socks and cardigan today. The surrounding area is quieter than usual, and the weather is pretty nice. And the news, what else do we watch nowadays except the protest in Egypt? So basically I also know that some Fox News journalists were beaten or something, and Anderson Cooper was roughed up but is ok now. I slept in the living room with the TV on. Watching the news on Egypt, and now there are some protests going on in Jordan and Yemen too, I wonder what happened to Iran at t...

Flood and Cold

I'm in sleep pants, t-shirt, socks, and a long cardigan right now -- on the sofa, in front of the TV, with blanket and laptop on my lap and feet on the coffee table -- not feeling very well. It's the sore throat, the one that you get at the beginning of a cold. Feels like there's a dark force* gripping my throat and squeezing and rubbing it against sandpaper. Not really complaining since this is probably only my third cold in seven years. (*I've just discovered Harry Potter movies. Prepare to hear me gushing rambling about it. And now I feel the need to include a lot of Harry Potter details in my everyday conversation.) So here I am, still in KL, and not at my hometown helping my parents cleaning the house. If you read my tweets, my parents' house in kampung is affected by last week's flood that hit Johor. And I heard it was worse than the one we had back in 2006, the only other time our house was flooded since we moved to this place. Flood is pretty ...

Good morning, everyone! Hope you had a good sleep. Now tell me..... ... howTH do I make my hair look at the very least half this good for work? I know these people probably have at least 20 people attending to their hair alone on daily basis but there must be some way for mortals like us, right? How much time do we need? At what time should we wake up? Who should we sell our soul to? Image: the internet

Ring a Bell

I was at my desk the whole day today, balancing some numbers, and it got me into thinking about my work and a thing or two from my old textbooks, wherever they are now. During studies, being forced to learn things that I didn't know when to use or if I'd ever use them at all in the future was the bane of my happiness. One example: all 4,367 chapters in the Accounting Theory and Practice. And Differentiation and Integration in Maths. You don't want to know what I did to survive these subjects or chapters. Some subjects were no more than just a list of acronyms and abbreviations, so that I could memorize a theory or even a sentence. Today, the numbers at work have brought me back to some of those management and economic theories and principles: Pareto, law of diminishing returns and Maslow's hierarchy . Below are some notes from Wikipedia because there's no way I would still have my textbooks or own proper management books at this moment. Pareto The Pare...

Boulder, Facebook and Clones

Let's talk about the recent Golden Globes. First, the all important dresses. My favourites are Anne Hathaway's (brown, Armani Privé) and Halle Berry's (black, Nina Ricci). E!'s Fashion Police, which thought-provoking discussion I follow every week, loves Anne Hathaway's dress too, but chooses the latter as one of their Worst Dress nominees. True, it's short and sheer and may not work on many women, but it works on Halle Berry. She's wearing her best accessory -- her body! Unconventional dresses can be polarizing. Or, you know, now you have some idea if I should help to dress you. Ricky Gervais. I know he was mean, and I rarely find jokes at other people's expense funny, but I thought Gervais was funny at the Globes. I mean, we expect... we want him to be mean, right? And yes, the awards too. I would love for these people and movies to win: - James Franco for 127 Hours. I love James Franco since Milk and Pineapple Express. I have watched the ...
