Cheat Work Thursday

One of my favourite scenes in SATC: The Movie is this New Year's Auld Lang Syne scene when Carrie crosses the town to see Miranda. Some of us probably watched the movie again on HBO last Sunday, despite maybe having already watched it for more than 10 times in the past 15 months. I did, with a blanket and hot Milo. Only my second time, and I thought it was funnier and more heartbreaking than the only other time I watched it. Is it because I'm now making comparisons watching it? LOL. Things were different last year, I know. I lost a couple of friends (and have probably 1 and 1/2 new ones) in the past 20 months or so. Oh no, they are not dead. They are still alive. I know this because I check the obituary every day. We are just... not so friends anymore, drifting away, having different lives. Well, I'll take part of the blame. I've been reading a lot of books lately. (By 'a lot' I usually mean anything more than one, and by 'books' I usually don't mean educational.) Here's the verdict, because I love to share my findings and save you from picking books that you may not like. The Host, Stephenie Meyer I had a good time reading Twilight, but I now love The Host more. Same-same, you say? Absolutely. So, this is supposed to be a sci-fi with aliens and all. (And how I loathe sci-fi . I used to say the same about vampires and love stories. Boo.) But just like Twilight, in a very Stephenie Meyer way, this is a love story. The book is also said to be intended for adults, unlike Twilight. But I don't see the difference. I think it's still meant for the Twilight age group, which is fine by me. The characters are likeable, and I like the question the book is asking: would you love the same person if they came in a different body? Eh, you don't even have to find an answer...

I went to look for Jodi Picoult books after watching My Sister's Keeper -- a story of a girl who was essentially born to donate her blood, cells and more to save her older sister with leukemia. Salem Falls caught my attention first, but I couldn't find it at the library. Found these three instead: Vanishing Acts In short, Vanishing Acts is about Delia, who learned, 28 years later, that she was kidnapped by her own father, Andrew, from her alcoholic mother when she was little. The side plot is: she is engaged to her childhood friend Eric and has a daughter with him, and their other best friend Fitz is in love with Delia. So, Andrew, who raised Delia and told her that her mother had passed away, is arrested for the kidnapping. Eric, who is a lawyer, defends Andrew, and Fitz, who is a reporter, is asked to report the juicy details by his boss. The side plot to the side plot, however: Eric is also an alcoholic.
