Survivor 37, Episode 9
"BREADTH-FIRST SEARCH"
The episode starts on the night of the John vote with Davie diplomatically telling everyone that he feels like the game has evolved enough to where they can all respect each other's gameplay without getting personal. Then cut to him in a wrestling arena mode, celebrating the Mayor of Slamtown's defeat by putting on John's jacket.
Alison, Kara and Alec talk about how they have been promising the Davids to flip the script — and vote Dan and Angelina out — but never gone through with it. Then cut to Dan sitting by the beach, alone, grieving his lost idol. To be fair, it was an overall bad night for him. Kara goes to him eventually and tries to talk him out of his moping. God, Kara is too good, too level-headed for this consoling business. In confessional, she tells us that the game is getting to Dan, and she needs to move forward without him to save her game.
Reward challenge is an obstacle course to retrieve numbered tiles and use the numbers to form a combination that will unlock a key and release snake puzzle pieces. The first team to solve the puzzle will win an afternoon at a burger bar, and in a random draw, Carl is not picked for the challenge. Team of Mike, Dan, Davie, Alec and Kara leads the race, but when Mike forgets to cover his lock combination, the other team manages to get close. But ultimately Mike's team wins.
Back at camp, Gabby checks in with Alison, her old friend at Tiva, to see if they want to be friends again, and Alison tells us that she's open to a new plan to build her resume.
Meanwhile at reward, when Davie leaves to take a walk, Mike asks everyone to stay Goliath strong. But Kara tells us again that Dan is a liability, and she doesn't want Dan to drag her down with him. She later tells Alec and Alison about Dan's second idol. It has been five minutes since Alison talked about building a resume, so it's time for her to tell us in confessional that there is strength in numbers and it only makes sense for her to stick with Goliath.
The Davids get up early the following morning to look for a new idol. And due to the huge size of the island, Christian looks for the idol using the "breadth-first search" technique — looking a little at a lot of different places, dividing the island into sectors. And the editing shows the sectors to us.
Sectors.
And it works. He finds the idol!
There isn't much going on at the immunity challenge — an obstacle course to retrieve three balls to be transferred on a disc across a balance beam and manoeuvred to land on a snake-shaped track — except that Alec wins.
So we are back at camp again, where Kara talks like she's saying goodbye to Dan already, and she goes to Gabby and Nick with the plan of splitting votes between Dan and Angelina. *bling* Alison was also there during the conversation, and *bling* in the next minute, she doesn't like it that the Davids are too quick to get on board with Kara's plan. Alison goes to Alec with this, and now Alec wants to take Christian out, so he and Alison talk to Kara to revise their plan again.
Looking at the Goliaths going for their meetings, separating themselves from the Davids, Nick doesn't believe in cross-tribal alliances anymore. The Davids then hold a meeting of their own, vomiting idols and advantages left and right, cackling at their sudden ray of hope.
Tribal council starts with Alison saying that the last tribal is a wake up call for her to start playing. Nah, don't think so. Every season, there will be at least one player who keeps talking about making moves but does absolutely nothing. And this season, the honour goes to Alison. Sorry, Alison, it's probably just a contractual cast archetype thing. Then the rest of the conversation is basically just everyone admitting that, whoTF are they kidding, there's still David vs Goliath. So, Strike Force is officially over, right? Does that thing ever take off anyway?
Before they vote, Nick takes out his steal-a-vote advantage and steals Alison's vote.
They get up to vote while Alec, Kara and Alison continue whispering with each other in between. At one point, Dan asks Kara if he should play his idol on himself or Alison 🙈. When Jeff calls for idols, Dan gets up and plays the idol on himself.
Then Jeff takes something out from the urn: Carl's idol nullifier, which he plays on Dan. Dan's face turns from grinning to sour. Ugh, not again, right, Dan?
And the vote goes — three to Christian, two to Angelina and six to Dan.
All Davids voted for Dan. Kara and Alec ended up voting for Angelina — not sure if this was them going back to vote splitting with the Davids as their Plan B? And Mike, Angelina and Dan voted for Christian.
Always.
