"TRIBAL LINES ARE BLURRED"
Another great episode, Survivor gods!
The two-hour episode starts on the night of the Dan vote with Angelina deliciously collecting names, specifically the two — Kara and Alec — who wrote her name down, then going to the Davids and throwing the names under the bus.
Very early the next morning, on a hunt with Davie, Nick finds a clue to an idol that can only be retrieved later that night at the other end of the island. I’ve lost count of the idols now. Nick already has one from before, and Christian also has one, right?
In the first reward challenge, two teams of five will walk on a rope bridge to reach a platform and land three rungs on target. Team of Alec, Alison, Mike, Christian and Gabby wins a picnic lunch of wraps and salads, and surprise letters from home in a come-from-behind victory. And this GIF of Angelina is the best.
During reward, realizing that he no longer has the numbers, Alec talks about charming Gabby and Christian off just like when he flirts while bartending. Meanwhile at camp, in the Carl-is-totally-in-control-of-this style, Carl throws Alec’s name to everyone, including to Alec’s close friend Kara. Alec already knew that he was a threat. By the time they get to immunity challenge, he also knows that he is the next target.
So, that five over hours immunity challenge is great.
For immunity, each player has to stand on a narrow perch with two hands holding on to a handle behind their head. Those who think they are safe can skip the challenge and feast on nachos, margaritas and beers instead. Nick, Carl and Angelina choose not to compete.
The challenge feels super painful. Can't remember when was the last time we had this long endurance challenge, so I welcome this (sorry). Although one of the first things gone is probably the food and booze, one by one these poor people limp off the perch, mostly lasting between 11 minutes and an hour plus. Gabby lasts for over two hours. Then it comes down to Christian and Alec, with people from the sideline cheering for them, some from under the bench, because the sun and what-are-we-doing-here-waiting-this-long. I love this entire 10 minutes screen time.
Past hour three, Christian offers Jeff a story to pass the time and pretty much holds Jeff captive while Alec is suffering next to him with contorting body and face.
The challenge then takes an emotional turn.
"Christian, you are safe. I'm not," Alec pleads.
"I know," Christian replies, tearing up. He tells Alec that he wants the win as he might not get another opportunity again. They probably are both holding on to their last tank, but Alec seems to be in pain more than Christian. He shuts down eventually, winning Christian the immunity, and cries in confessional, knowing his fate.
Back at camp, Carl lands himself a new title — the Godfather — as he keeps dictating and pushing Alec’s name, which pisses Gabby off. Alec scrambles and talks to Christian about gathering numbers to vote for Carl. At one point, Christian and Gabby talk about voting for Carl too. But in the end, in a tribal where both Angelina and Alison grab the opportunity to take a jab at each other, Alec is sent home in a 9-1 vote.
And the game continues.
In the next reward challenge, two teams of four will swim out to climb a tall ladder and dive to release a set of buoys underwater and shoot them into baskets. The winning team will enjoy an afternoon of boat tripping around the islands of Fiji and a picnic lunch of fried chicken, potatoes, corn and cheesecake. Team of Mike, Kara, Carl and Davie wins the challenge. And now that Carl has won a reward, Jeff reminds Angelina that she’s the only one left who has never won any. Also, if it hasn't been established already, please know that Carl loves beer. Beers are served on the boat, so he’s possibly half drunk by the time they reach the picnic location.
At camp, Gabby warns Christian that right now Carl is perceived as the one calling the shots, so they both aren't going to get credited for their moves as long as Carl's in the game. She later goes to Alison, who broke down with guilt for voting out Alec the night before, suggesting they work together to get rid of Carl.
Back from reward, feeling good and in power, Carl lies down in the hammock, giving instructions to Nick, Angelina, Christian, Davie and Mike that they are all voting for Alison. Just for a tiny bit, I kind of get where this Carl's clouded vision comes from. He was on the chopping block line six days ago and had to work hard, sacrifice and strategize to get where he is now. In his mind, he deserves this throne.
Christian tells Mike that Carl is drunk with power and suggests, “Let’s say... Carl just magically went away...”
But before that, they are running out of rice.
So naturally, Angelina, who took Advanced Negotiations at Yale MBA, tasks herself to trade... their entire camp for more rice.
My god. Ask Yale for a refund, please.
Immunity challenge is an obstacle course that involves spinning until you're dizzy and spelling an 11-letter word at the end.
But before they get to it, Angelina lays out her epic offer to Jeff.
"We are desperate. So, our starting offer is all of the fishing gear, the majority of all the cook sets, two of the comfort chairs, the hanging swing, the remaining tea and coffee... You can even ask for more if you want." ~ not the exact quote, but pretty much it.
How is that possible that no one stops her??
The funny thing is, Jeff says it is a lowball offer, but Angelina doesn't notice the tone because she’s trained in this field. This is her forte. So she laughs and says, “You have to start low. If you know negotiation, that's what you'd do.”
Help me.
Jeff counters that if somebody sacrifices their shot at immunity, he’ll provide enough rationed rice for the tribe. So Angelina volunteers, because resume. But thinking about it, replenished rice with camp intact and you are not voted out after sacrificing immunity — maybe Yale's Advanced Negotiations is on to something after all.
So Davie wins immunity spelling PERSPECTIVE after Carl wrongly guesses PERCEPTIONS.
But the biggest achiever of the day is, of course, Angelina with her satisfied expression never missed by the camera, which is the best.
At tribal, they talk about the tribe dynamic since the last vote: how the vote was a sign that the Goliaths are willing to break tribal alliances. Also, Nick notes that the scrambling table has now turned, and everyone agrees that they are all playing a game. The usual.
Then the vote goes — four to Alison and five to Carl.
So it's a blindside — not only to Carl, but also to Nick, Davie and, fine, Angelina.
And just like that, the Davids, the minority underdogs whose backs were against the wall just a week ago, burn their majority.
Would be interesting to see what happens next week.
