Survivor 37, Episode 6
“AREN’T BROCHACHOS JUST ADORABLE”
The episode starts with Jabeni cracking up at their camp the morning after, reminiscing the jacket-gate, and Angelina telling Lyrsa that the only reason she wrote Lyrsa’s name down was because she wants Natalie’s jacket, which does not make Lyrsa feel at ease at all. If it hasn't already, the jacket-gate just reminds Nick, Mike and Lyrsa of how sneaky Angelina can be and what she will do for a million.
Then we pause for the reward challenge.
In the reward challenge, all three teams must carry a huge bag of coconuts on a part-water course and hold it high enough at a stop so one member attached to the bag can reach four rings to be landed on four targets. The first team to finish will win cooking utensils, herbs, spices and ten vegetable kebabs, and the second team will win two kebabs 🤷🏻♀️. Vuku had a huge lead until the tossing portion of the challenge, when Alec kind of blew it, allowing Dan and Nick to catch up for Tiva and Jabeni, winning them the first and second place.
So at Tiva, the tribe is enjoying their herbs and spices, with Dan biting on a pepper (the tiniest, also means the spiciest one) and the Brochachos solidifying their bond. Christian, who earlier went fishing and explained it to us in physics but caught nothing, says that his relationship with the Brochachos is a validation to his lifetime self-improvement in overcoming fear of social rejection.
While John is showing the very interested Christian his moonwalking skill, we hear Gabby telling us that it's obvious to her that the Goliath guys are really Christian's new best friends now, and she has to find a place in the game for herself. So she talks to Alison for an alliance, and Alison tells us that she believes she can work with Gabby moving forward. In fact, Alison is even ready to blindside Dan, who she identifies as the biggest threat in the game, with his Brochachos membership and an idol (two idols) in his pocket.
At Vuku, Elizabeth is almost losing it with their bamboo bed and is telling us about her back pain. Most of her tribemates do not seem to understand the urgency and the scheduling of this bed-fixing project, which they cautiously ask her. I feel for Elizabeth. Back pain is no small nuisance, if it is not already a major injury, but I don’t know how splitting bamboo flattens the bed, unless you shave it to the exact height you want? And the kind of work that would involve already sounds like another pain to me. But lousy shelter, when all you have is time on the island, is one of my Survivor pet peeves. So I'm all for shelter improvement. While her tribemates look a tad confused that the issue is sprung on them out of nowhere, Carl is already thinking about voting her out. And I need the GIF of Elizabeth marching into the woods and dragging a long bamboo back to camp with purpose and determination.
We need the GIF.
So it's time for the immunity challenge.
For immunity, each team has to carry water using a huge, heavy saucer through an obstacle course to fill up a well that will release a bag of puzzle pieces to solve. And Jabeni is a disaster. They are slow and uncoordinated, and most of the water they carry just gets spilled along the way. They keep going anyway and are forced to make two and a half brutal trips before just giving up on the last one when they drop the saucer while Vuku is already on their last piece of the puzzle. And Jeff enjoys telling Jabeni how horrible their performance is, although Vuku has also lost two out of the five challenges so far. There are blood and blisters, but Mike also tears up at the mat talking to Jeff about the loss.
Back at camp, both Lyrsa and Angelina campaign for the other to be voted out. And it comes down to Nick and Mike who, although look torn, seem to side with Lyrsa.
While they are discussing bond, trust and loyalty, Angelina in her Angelina-way tells Jeff at tribal that besides trust and loyalty, she's also thinking about strategy, and they wouldn’t be voting for Natalie the previous tribal if they didn't have a plan.
There are always social skill lessons applicable to real life on Survivor. And I cringe thinking of how easy it is to act or react or drop little remarks and gestures the same eye-rolling way Angelina does. Sigh, universe, may I have a better social antenna than this, please. Thank you.
In the end, Lyrsa goes home and, as she notes and dreads in her exit speech, will be sitting next to Natalie at the reunion.
