What's raya without good food and games. Over the past few years, our family has moved on from Barbies to Saidina to Cho Tai Tee, and this year we had 'Mafia' 🎊🎉. Well, we didn't exactly call it 'Mafia', we call it 'pembunuh-pembunuh(-orang kampung-doktor)'.
The simpler version that we play:
Roles:
- several 'pembunuh', which number cannot be more than 'orang kampung'. We had three.
- one person will be the 'doctor'.
- the rest will be 'orang kampung'.
- a 'chairman' and an 'assistant' (optional) to moderate the games (and look for cheaters!).
How to:
1) All players will be asked to pick a role from folded papers, remain confidential, close their eyes and await further instructions.
2) The chairman will ask the pembunuh to open their eyes and discreetly pick an orang kampung to murder. They will be asked to close their eyes again.
3) Next, the chairman will ask the doctor to open their eyes and discreetly pick an orang kampung to save. They will be asked to close their eyes again.
4) The chairman will then ask everyone to open their eyes and announce if the murder was successful. If the doctor managed to save the right orang kampung, the murder was unsuccessful.
5) Everyone will then be asked to vote to eliminate someone, one person at every round, who they think the pembunuh is. The objective of the game is for the pembunuh to outnumber the orang kampung, or for the orang kampung to eliminate all pembunuh.
6) This is when the psychology, reading-other-people, playing-with-other-people's-lack-of-info-and-security games begin, and I suck at it(!). You have no idea how manipulative 9-to-13-year-olds can be.
- We played the game by accident after spending some time trying to locate our playing cards (which we believe have been hidden by my mother). It has become one of our favourites since. Once, we even played in the dark because, you know, in kampung sometimes you have these insects come out at night, hovering around the lights? So we had to switch the lights off. Such determination.
