The Handmaid's Tale, Episode 8

JEZEBELS

The Commander enforces the law and the religion, just not on himself. I’ve heard this before in real life. But never mind that.

Flashback goes to Nick — told ya, part of the problem. He was at a work agency, looking for a new job because he wasn’t able to keep his last four or something, and got kicked out of the office because he was holding the line and got into a fight with the person behind him. His “Career Counsellor” bought him coffee and introduced him to the fixer of the world's problem: Sons of Jacob ie Gilead. So we are introduced to another Gilead douche — a well-dressed man who speaks as if he's a decent guy and drops the word Bible here and there in a conversation.

This douche was later seen with the Commander and another douche in a limo as part of the decision makers to “collect women to be impregnated by men of superior status, of course”.

“Maybe the wife should be there for the act. There is Scriptural precedent,” said Douche No 1.

“'Act' may not be the best name from a branding perspective. The Ceremony?” the Commander, the OG Douche, suggested.

“Sounds good. Nice and godly. The wives would eat that shit up,” Douche No 2 seconded.

Nick — part of the problem — was driving. When asked of his opinion about the Handmaids, he agreed with the Commander.

Present day, the Commander shaves June’s legs and asks her to put on some makeup, a glittery short dress and a pair of uncomfortable heels — yay! We are going to a brothel!

So, these religious men have an open secret, a place where they can go see prostitutes. June is one that night, and they spend the night there. Of course, the Commander is proud and pleased with himself of this sneaky trip, an adventure that he pulls off so easily, because he'll never not think he's the best.

The surprise of the night, however, is not in the form of June’s gorgeous hair, made with no hair products or curling iron, but in a familiar face: Moira! Moira's alive, and she's a prostitute aka a Jezebel now, along with some high-flying career women of Before: some CEOs, college professors, lawyers. The gloomy news is, Moira seems to have given up.

The next day, Nick ends his relationship with June because “it’s too dangerous”. We learn he reported a Commander’s wrongdoing before.

And Serena gives June a gift: her old music box, because June is 12, and Serena is fun and thoughtful.
“A perfect gift. A girl trapped in a box. She only dances when someone else opens the lid. I will not be the girl in the box.” — June Osborne.
