The Handmaid's Tale, Episode 10

NIGHT

We're continuing from the last episode.

June gets back from the market and hides the Jezebel's package behind the bathtub, and Serena is already waiting outside the door to award her with a strike on the face. Exhibit A is brought out: the short gold dress from Jezebel's.

Serena drags June to the bathroom, forces her to pee on a stick and warns June that she better pray she’s pregnant. She herself sits on the floor, praying, bowing in front of the stick while waiting for the result.

Without context, watching just that bowing scene, you’d want this woman to get whatever she’s wishing for. But no, I just saw her force a grown woman pee in front of her and yell “Don’t be a child!” when the woman couldn’t. So I just want some violent ends for her right now.

June is pregnant.

Changing her tone, Serena tells June that “He’s answered our prayers.”

“You think I prayed for this? You think I prayed to bring a baby into this house?” June snickers, kneeling on the bathtub, blood streaming from her forehead.

Serena confronts the Commander and tells him that June is pregnant, but the child is not his. And we get to watch two evil persons throw insults at each other for the following two minutes.

“You’re weak, and God will never let you pass on that weakness. You can’t father a child because you’re not worthy,” Serena spits the last words.

Serena brings June out for a drive the next day -- to the house where Hannah is now living. But June is locked in the car, so she can only bang on the window and scream and cry, calling for Hannah, who’s being flaunted by Serena from the front door.

Back in the car, Serena warns June that as long as “her baby” is safe, so is Hannah.

“What is wrong with you? How can you do this? You are deranged..."

Ok, a warning, it continues with nothing but profanity:

"You’re fucking evil, you know that? You goddamned, motherfucking monster. Fucking heartless. Sadistic. Motherfucking. You’re a cunt. Fuck you, Serena. You are gonna burn in goddamned motherfucking hell, you crazy, evil bitch,” June goes on, giving Serena her honest assessment.

June opens the Jezebel's package that night and... it contains letters from people imprisoned by Gilead. Ok, sometimes my light bulb just isn’t working. I don’t get it. You risk your life for these letters to be read by... another prisoner? Letters are nice, but I thought this called for at least a phone? An escape plan? A weapon?

The next day, the Handmaids are called for Salvaging, where they will have to group-kill a convict in a public execution. Yeah.

Turns out, that day’s convict is Janine, and the method of choice is stoning *immediately thinking of countries that practice capital punishment by stoning in real life*. Ofglen is the first to disobey and get taken away, followed by June and the rest, who are allowed to leave in the end, but not without a warning from Aunt Lydia: there will be consequences. The next morning, several Eyes come and take June away in a black van, despite the Commander and Serena’s protest.

(Fine, I get the message with those letters. It's banding together, right? Just like on Twitter?)

Meanwhile, Moira reaches Canada and reunites with Luke.

And if any of us needs therapy or something, now is the time to get it before the next season starts.
