Match Point
I spent two afternoons in a row (with mobile off and curtains drawn) watching TV for hours from The Sentinel to Memoirs of Geisha to Match Point to Capote to American Pastime to Night at the Museum to even Hallmark's(!) Love's Long Journey.
From two afternoons of movies, I love Woody Allen's Match Point the most, a story of how with a bit of luck, things might fall your way like a ball that hits the net in a tennis match.
It's a story of a man (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who wants a new life and seems to finally find it all when he befriends and marries the daughter of the Hewetts -- a wealthy upper-class British family with a successful family business, whose lifestyle includes breakfast at the country club, weekends at the country house, hunting, making contributions, frequenting operas and art galleries, having only the best champagne and caviar, and marrying right.
Seems like a hugely appealing life (to some), the movie just makes you not want any of it.
Then of course he isn't that happy. He has an affair and soon feels the affair would threaten his new, comfortable life, so he has to get rid of his girlfriend (played by Scarlett Johansson).
While I doubt you'll like any of the characters, I think you'll love the movie too.

(My favourite Idol performance last week was by this 18-year-old who sang Mika's Grace Kelly. He sang Chasing Cars sounding British in the audition round and apparently has been living / travelling in his car for a year now.)
