Survivor 32, Episode 9
"IT'S PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE"
Apparently, another plan for the big group last tribal was to vote for Jason. Tai missed the last minute memo to change it to Nick, thus his vote for Jason. In panic, he tells Jason that he voted for Debbie, and now he's stuck in an alliance with Scot and Jason.
So Tai, Scot and Jason turn themselves into J'tia and the Three Amigos: hiding axe and machete, dumping water on the fire, and flaunting idols like a**holes at tribal council. To be clear, it's not a compliment.
At the reward challenge, the schoolyard pick for teams spells war:
- Joe volunteers to sit out. He'll join the group that he's rooting for if they win; he bets on the women.
- Scot, Jason and Tai stick together and open a spot for one of the women. Julia volunteers herself.
- The other team of Aubry, Debbie, Michele and Cydney loses the challenge.
Julia is expanding her options. Going to the finals with two unlikeable players like Scot and Jason is also appealing.
This makes the other side of the tribe, except for Debbie, wary of Julia.
But the plan to vote for Julia is thwarted when she wins immunity.
Once they are back at camp, Debbie quickly lays out the plan in front of the women and Joe that they are going to split the vote 3-3 Tai-Scot in a meeting that also includes Julia, the very person that their alliance doesn't trust.
So now Cydney and Aubry are talking about voting for Debbie for her lack of discretion and logical thinking. While Michele is ok with the plan, Joe is not. Needing four votes, they come full circle and are forced to recruit Julia to vote Debbie out.
I don't understand this about Aubry. She did this once to Peter, and now she's voting another loyal ally when it's still a long way to go. It's not even because she wants to flush the idol. She votes for Debbie because Debbie isn't able to see that Julia is not really their solid ally, which is not ideal, of course, but how is that worse than Julia herself, who's friends with the enemies?
But I also need some time to think of what Aubry's side should do instead. Put all votes on Scot? Will Jason and Tai play the super idol on Scot? Aubry's side will still lose an ally in Cydney then, but at least the idol will be gone? But will Cydney do nothing if she knows she could be the other side's target?
Ok, I can only spare five minutes on this because it's not my problem. The point is, I can only understand Aubry's move, sacrificing an ally, only if it flushes out the idols. Otherwise, if nothing changes, they'll get into almost the same trap next week, only worse.
Why on earth does the production think this super idol is a great idea? Yul, Tony and Terry went far because of it. It makes the story go just one way unless the side that doesn't have it is willing to sacrifice one of their own.
The preview shows that Aubry is trying to lure Tai to their side. The thing with previews, 9 out of 10 times, they turn out the opposite. Because as long as Tai has the idol, what's the point of him going with Aubry? To be her 6th? And what more could Tai ask for at this moment? Besides idol, he also has two most hated people of the season to go to the finals with.
So let's say this is 1 of those 10 times ie Aubry tries but does not succeed. The plot now is all for Tai, Scot and Jason going to the final three, and Tai winning. I don't have a problem with Tai winning, I think. But I'm not particularly excited about it either because the thought of these three landing the spots at the finals just like that -- because of an idol that saves their butts instead of a good gameplay -- makes the rest of the season seem boring. I don't watch Survivor to be bored.
