Survivor 30, Episode 6
"ODD WOMAN OUT"
I. Can't. Pick. A. Winner.
But let's go back a few days.
The moment Dan's manties story is brought back, I start to worry if this is a theme. If we are to repeat conversations, it can only mean Rodney's mother is going to be brought up soon. I'm sure this woman is amazing and wonderful, but the last time Rodney mentioned her, he practically asked Joe to hit on her. And that's just the icing on the cake of Rodney's relationship with his mother and women. I don't think I can take any more of these.
Rodney also can't find anything in common with Dan, Mike and Sierra because the three are from Maine, Texas and Utah. He especially can't be in an alliance with Mike because Mike goes to church on Sundays, is celibate, and doesn't drink and party. Rodney is into "girls, having fun, partying and not settling down". But he does "swear to God" and still loves Joaquin, although they are both like "apples and oranges".
Joaquin loves Rodney too, although it feels like he's just happy to have a lifeline. He asks Sierra how she was with Dan and Rodney and wants Sierra "to give it right back" to the Blue Collars who didn't treat her right. For a guy who was supposed to be a total douche and started the game with a hideously executed lie, Joaquin does manage to make several friends and avoid annoying the rest.
Meanwhile, Dan's idea of apology and pleasant conversation includes asking Sierra to "shut your mouth and open your ears".
Nagarote's reward win is one of the best things that happens this episode. Maybe it's the edit and music, but we have all the athletic guys and a professional athlete Tyler on one side and the underdogs on the other, and the latter win.
The following day, Carolyn vs Rodney at the memory challenge for immunity is a good 30-second comic relief. It almost feels like a producers' setup. And Rodney totally throws that challenge, right?
Then we have Mike, the huge blue collar guy who ate a scorpion and got sick because of it the first day on the island, throwing his round for Kelly, which is the best three minutes of the episode.
In other scenes, Mike the smart strategist who knows when to talk, when to shut his mouth and when to hug Sierra also emerges.
Rodney and Mike's initial plan was to vote Joe out because he was a threat. But when Mike sees Rodney's friendship with Joaquin, he changes course and plots with Dan, Joe and Sierra, and they all vote Joaquin out.
So it's the merge episode next week.
On one side, we have:
- Mike, Dan, Sierra and Joe.
- Tyler and Rodney (who I can't imagine being in an alliance or even talking together, ever).
On the other, we have:
- Jenn, Hali, Will, Kelly and Carolyn.
- Shirin.
I can't wait to see the dynamic -- or, to be honest, collision -- between the reunited alliances and the orphans:
- Mike and Kelly.
- Tyler (who now has no friend) and Carolyn.
- Joe and Jenn (who's also tight with Hali).
Again, the producers are making us root for the characters, and this week we have Mike. With it, anyone can be a winner now, except for Rodney.
